Accessibility Support on Kiddom

Kiddom is designed with accessibility in mind. We continuously refine our platform to meet or exceed Section 508 and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA accessibility standards.

Screen Readers

Kiddom is best supported with the following screen readers: VoiceOver, NVDA, and ChromeVox. For the best experience, we recommend using one of the following setups:

Note about math equations and screen readers

Kiddom uses MathJax to display math equations. Some screen readers, like ChromeVox and VoiceOver, directly support MathML (the format used by MathJax), while others, such as NVDA, require an additional math add-on to read mathematical equations.

You can find more information at An introduction to screen readers | AbilityNet if you're new to using screen readers with your students. Kiddom includes several built-in supports to enhance screen reader accessibility:

  • Alternative text descriptions for images
  • Labels on interactive elements across the platform
  • Screen reader-only descriptions and instructions for complex interactions when appropriate

Keyboard Navigation & Shortcuts

Navigating the site using a keyboard provides a smooth experience for users who navigate without a mouse. Below are the key controls to help you move through the site efficiently.

  • Use Tab and Shift + Tab to navigate through interactive elements.
  • Cycle through menu items using the arrow keys.
  • A "Skip to Main Content" link is available at the beginning of each page, providing quick access to the main content.

For a comprehensive list of keyboard shortcuts, visit our article Keyboard Navigation & Shortcuts.

Compatibility with Assistive Technologies

Kiddom does not have built-in tools for every need, which is why browser extensions and third-party tools can be valuable additions. Kiddom is compatible with many of these tools, supporting a wide range of assistive technologies to enhance the learning experience for all users. We strive to ensure compatibility with assistive technologies, including:

  • Screen Readers (VoiceOver, NVDA, ChromeVox, etc.) – Providing auditory feedback for navigation and content interaction.
  • Resizable Text & Browser Zoom – Allowing users to adjust text size and zoom for improved readability.
  • Text-to-Speech & Speech-to-Text – Supporting voice commands and audio-based interaction.
  • Command & Control (Voice Control, Voice Access, etc.) - Enabling users to navigate and interact hands-free using voice commands or alternative input methods.
  • Browser Text Translation – Helping multilingual users access content in their preferred language.
  • Highlighting & Annotation Tools – Enhancing interactive learning and note-taking.
  • Dictionary Tools – Providing quick definitions and language support.
  • Word Prediction Tools – Assisting with writing through auto-complete suggestions.

NIMAS-Compatible Content

Kiddom provides select instructional materials in the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS) format, which can be converted into Braille and other accessible formats. If you need NIMAS files or more details about available materials, please contact us.

Accommodating Diverse Learning Needs

Kiddom enables educators to tailor instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners by providing flexible, accessible, and personalized learning experiences.

Creating Accommodations

Do you need to accommodate a specific learning need? You can create personalized versions of any activity or assessment with appropriate accommodations, then assign these modified versions to specific students. For step-by-step instructions on personalizing activities, visit our guide on personalizing activities.

Example: If a student struggles with reading, you can record yourself reading the questions aloud. Students can then play this audio when answering questions. We recommend recording the questions exactly as written.

Fonts & Readability

The Kiddom platform features the Lexend font throughout its interface to enhance readability. Lexend was selected based on research demonstrating its effectiveness in improving reading fluency, particularly for individuals with dyslexia. Users can also customize the font through browser plugins.

Images

Images in the Kiddom platform include alt-text descriptions. One exception to this rule is profile images, which are purely decorative. These images are marked as decorative on our web pages, allowing screen readers to ignore them.

Known Issues

Kiddom’s curriculum includes videos and PDFs from various sources and publishers. While we strive to provide closed captions, transcripts, and accessible document formatting, some materials may not yet fully meet accessibility standards.

  • Videos:  We are actively working to ensure full caption and transcript availability. If you find a video without these features, please contact us with specific details and timestamps to help us resolve the issue efficiently. For embedded Loom videos, you can access the transcript by clicking “Watch on Loom” and opening the transcript panel on the right side.
  • PDFs: We are working to improve the accessibility of all PDFs on our platform. Accessible PDFs should include readable text for screen readers, properly structured headings, alternative text for images, title tags, and other key features. If you encounter an inaccessible PDF, please report the issue with specific details, including page numbers if possible, to help us address it more effectively.

Contact & Support

We will work with you to find a solution, though timeframes and resolutions may vary depending on the specific issue.
