Configuring iPads for Kiddom: A Guide for Educators

iPads are powerful educational tools that enhance learning, engagement, and accessibility in the classroom. This guide provides best practices and recommended settings to ensure students have a seamless experience using Kiddom on their iPads.

Initial Setup & Configuration

Creating a Classroom-Friendly iPad Environment

To optimize iPads for classroom use, consider utilizing the following tools and settings:

  • Apple School Manager: Streamline device management and app deployment.
  • Managed Apple IDs: If using Apple Classroom, these IDs provide controlled access to apps and settings.
  • Wi-Fi & Restrictions: Ensure a stable internet connection and set appropriate restrictions to minimize distractions.

Note: This guide includes details on technical configurations, including sites to allow for the best Kiddom experience.

Recommended Settings

To maximize student engagement and focus while using Kiddom, consider adjusting these settings:

Guided Access Mode

Locks students into a single app to reduce distractions.

  • Navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access
  • Enable the feature and set a passcode.

Screen Time & App Limits

Monitor and set daily usage limits for apps.

  • Go to Settings > Screen Time
  • Configure time limits based on classroom needs.

Display & Brightness

  • Adjust brightness to reduce eye strain.
  • Enable Auto-Lock to preserve battery life.

Microphone & Camera Access

For information on how to unblock microphone and camera access, please refer to this article.

Organizing Apps for Easy Access

To create a structured and distraction-free learning experience, consider these recommendations:

  • Use Folders: Group apps by subject or function (e.g., Reading, Math, Creativity).
  • Dock Essential Apps: Place frequently used apps in the dock for quick access. If using a rostering system like Clever to access Kiddom, include an icon for it.
  • Limit the Number of Apps Per Screen: Helps young learners focus on key applications.
  • Use Browser Bookmarks: If students access Kiddom via a web browser, bookmark the page and add it to the bookmarks bar for easy navigation.

Accessibility Features for Young Learners

Younger students may need additional support to navigate iPads effectively. Consider enabling these accessibility features:

Text & Display Adjustments

  • Larger & Bold Text: Enhances readability.
    • To change text size, go to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size.

  • Reduce Motion: Minimizes visual distractions.

Touch Accommodations

  • AssistiveTouch: Supports students with fine motor challenges.
  • Tap Assistance: Adjusts sensitivity for students with dexterity limitations.

Speech & Audio Settings

  • Speak Selection: Reads text aloud when highlighted.

Note: For more information on enabling read-aloud functionality on iPads and other devices, refer to our instructional video.

  • Live Listen: Enhances audio for students using AirPods or compatible headphones.

Kiddom Recommended Browser: Google Chrome

Most updated mobile browsers (e.g., Safari, Chrome, Firefox) support Kiddom. However, Safari on mobile devices does not have full Kiddom capabilities when it comes to creating video and audio recordings. We highly recommend using Google Chrome if that is available. Chrome can be downloaded here for iPads.

By thoughtfully configuring iPads and establishing structured usage patterns, educators can create a more engaging and effective learning environment. Regularly reviewing and adjusting settings based on student needs will ensure the best possible experience with Kiddom.
